Savannah State earns second place at National Urban League competition

A group of students from Savannah State University placed second this month at the National Urban League's Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP) Case Study Competition, held in Orlando, Fla.

Sponsored by Sodexo Inc., the competition required students to conceive a plan for Sodexo to attract, hire and retain 1,500 millennial candidates within the following year; develop a zero-based budget; make a 17-minute presentation to a panel of judges that included Sodexo executives; and participate in a 10-minute question-and-answer session.

The winning team from Savannah State created an internship called "The Sodexo Academy," which would give potential candidates hands-on experience with the company and, upon academy completion, a full-time position.  Team members included Danielle Bailey, a senior biology and chemistry major from Atlanta; Janine Dawkins, a senior behavioral analysis major from Ewa Beach, Hawaii; Concetta Dotson, a junior biology major from Sacramento, Calif.; and Charlene Flowers, a senior political science major from Newark, New Jersey.  Keenya Mosley, Ph.D., coordinator of placement for the College of Business Administration, served as team adviser.

The case study competition is part of the annual BEEP conference, which this year carried the theme, "The Case for Effective Leadership."  Students from more than 64 historically black colleges and universities participated in leadership development activities and networked with company executives.

Established in 1890, Savannah State University is on the move to become the best value-added university in the nation.  The university's 4,100 students are enrolled in 23 undergraduate and five graduate programs in three colleges: Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology.
