Sweet Briar alumnae make second payment to college
Alumnae have made the second of three payments to Sweet Briar College required under the mediated settlement to keep the school open.
The college's new administration confirmed Thursday that it had received a payment of $3.5 million from Saving Sweet Briar Inc. several days ahead of the deadline set under the agreement.

That brings to $8.5 million what Saving Sweet Briar has paid so far, with a final payment of another $3.5 million due by Sept. 2.
The agreement requires the nonprofit group to pay a total of $12 million by September to support short-term operations. As part of the agreement, Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring will release $16 million of restricted endowment funds for general operations.
The private women's college in Amherst County is being kept open under new leadership as the result of the June settlement.
The college says nearly 300 students are enrolled for the fall semester. Convocation will take place Aug. 26 - the day after the school would have been shut down by the previous leadership. Classes will begin Aug. 27.
