HUSON gets funding for inaugural White Coat Ceremony
The Hampton University School of Nursing (HUSON) was selected as one of only 100 schools of nursing in the nation to receive funding to initiate annual White Coat Ceremonies for its students. The ceremonies are designed to instill a commitment to providing compassionate care among future health professionals, and are customary for medicine, pharmacy and physical therapy professions.
"To have been selected to receive funding from Arnold P. Gold Foundation (APGF) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is an acknowledgement we are very pleased about," said HUSON Dean Dr. Deborah E. Jones. "In planning our first White Coat Ceremony, we want students to understand its significance and come away with a sense of pride and dedication to compassionate nursing care."
The HUSON ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., September 25 in the Student Center Ballroom. Approximately, 36 students will participate. The program will consist of the recitation of an oath, cloaking of students in a white coat, and a reception for students and invited guests. Students also will receive a specially designed pin that will serve as a visual reminder of their oath and commitment to providing high quality care. Additionally, the event's speaker will be HUSON Alumna and President / Administrator of Sentara CarePlex Hospital, Debra Flores '83.
"By offering White Coat Ceremonies, our schools are sending a clear message to new nursing students that compassionate care must be a hallmark of their clinical practice," said Dr. Eileen T. Breslin, AACN President.
