Johnson C. Smith University receives $4,000 grant
Johnson C. Smith University, along with four other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs),  has received a $4,000 grant from the Human Rights Campaign and Promised Land Film's Outreach and Engagement Campaign.
The grant will fund several initiatives at JCSU. First, it will bring to campus the screening of  the film, "The New Black," which examines the role of race, faith, justice and identity in the lives of the politically powerful in Maryland leading into the 2013 election-which included a referendum to legalize same-sex marriage in the state.
Warren Radebe, a senior at JCSU and vice president of S.A.F.E. Pride-the campus' LGBTQ and human rights organization-said that HBCUs must foster a more inclusive environment if they are to remain relevant in the 21st century.
A portion of the funding will enable JCSU to offer LGBT Pride Day on Nov. 19 for students and the community.  "This event will involve many LGBTQA focused organizations from the community as we conduct various edutainment and interactive activities," said Radebe.  "The initiative intends to raise awareness and serve as a catalyst for discussions on campus that will lead to a more inclusive environment that welcomes all students to a safe environment."
