Cheyney University Class of 2016 Moves In To New Residence Hall
The class of 2016 began arriving on campus on August 22nd. For them the day was filled with "firsts" -- their first time away from home for many, their first day of college, and the first occupants of a newly constructed college residence hall - the first one on Cheyney University's campus in 30 years.
The split stone-faced building, located adjacent to the historic quad of America's oldest HBCU, fits right in with the solid stone buildings lining the nearby quad's green lawns. The building, with its dramatic spaces and modern amenities, started to come to life as the students moved in.
Apropos for the 21st century, environmental factors were taken into account and 175 wells were installed 200 feet below the University practice field for the geothermal climate control system. As a result, the system supports central air and heat throughout the building, resulting in a year-round 70 degree temperature. Other built-in technology includes security cameras, and key card access to suites, study rooms, and lounges throughout the building.
The state-of-the-art facility offers a premier suite-style living and learning community (LLC) to support the development of students' holistic learning and experiences. Guided by the caring staff of the Cheyney's University College, a cohort of students share common academic interests, live together on a suite-style wing or floor, participate in activities together, and are also enrolled in a group of related courses.

By integrating faculty with the undergraduate residential experience, faculty, staff, and students develop a sense of interconnectedness and a mutual concern for the enrichment of their collegiate experience. In addition, the LLC will provide out-of-the classroom interactions between students, staff, and their faculty in common area venues conducive to quality studying, informational meetings, lectures, and collaborative projects located within the residence hall.

The new occupants will live in spacious air-conditioned single, double, and quad suites, offering private and semi-private room accommodations. Amenities in each room include a furnished common area, mini-refrigerator and microwave oven and bathrooms. State-of-the-art technology is found in each room, with basic cable and Ethernet connections linked directly to the University network and the Internet. Ready access to laundry facilities, vending machines, a conference room, and trash disposal room are incorporated into the plan.

The freshmen will continue to arrive through August 24th and have the new dorm to themselves until the upperclassmen move in on the 25th. Classes begin on the 27th.

The building was designed by architects RJHM of Princeton, NJ.
