Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating the Alliance's Andrew W. Mellon Foundation direct grant award for the "Expanding Library Support for Faculty Research in HBCUs" project. Forward this announcement for a statistician widely among your contacts.

Statistician Position Description

The HBCU Library Alliance is seeking a statistician to support the eighteen-month Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded project "Expanding Library Support for Faculty Research in HBCUs."  The long-term goals of this project are the integration of HBCU library services and resources into faculty research initiatives and building collaborative approaches within the HBCU library community to provide ongoing support for faculty research.

The statistician will be hired to support creation, administration, and reporting of a faculty survey. The survey will be distributed to faculty at 82 HBCUs in the doctoral/research, master's, baccalaureate and medical levels that include research in their missions. The statistician will provide expertise in survey design, distribution strategies to ensure statistical validity, and a summary of survey results. The survey will seek to gather information that can assist libraries in understanding faculty research interests, plans, challenges, and support needs. Design of the faculty survey will be coordinated with a survey of HBCU libraries, to be conducted by the HBCU Library Alliance, which will assess current practices.

Project activities are scheduled to begin in January 2014.

Responsibilities

  • Create a web-based faculty survey form with input from a nine-member Faculty Library Advisory Committee that coordinates with the HBCU Library Alliance Library Survey form
  • Test the faculty survey form to limit potential for misinterpretation, errors, or technical problems
  • Determine appropriate sample sizes for desired tolerance and confidence levels
  • Recommend distribution methodologies to support good response
  • Distribute the survey to individual contacts provided by the HBCU Library Alliance, monitor survey responses and resolve technical problems with survey administration
  • Produce reports by discipline and for the whole when the survey is closed, including both quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • Provide a summary report on the faculty survey and contribute content to the combined assessment of the library and faculty survey

Requirements

  • Current experience in the application of statistics in similar survey projects
  • Ability to explain statistical concepts to non-statisticians
  • Effective communication skills
  • Cooperative, team-oriented and proactive
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage tight deadlines while maintaining high standards
  • A professional, proactive approach to time-management of day-to-day activities
  • The statistician could be a graduate student or faculty member at an HBCU.

Project Deliverables

  1. A report on survey results of faculty research interests and support needs
  2. Content and/or insight into the comparative results of the faculty survey and the library survey results highlighting common findings and discrepancies
  3. Summary reports for each participating HBCU providing the results of both the library and faculty surveys for their institution only.
To apply, forward a proposal of your recommendations for conducting this project, costs, and a resume highlighting relevant experience to my attention no later than Friday, December 13th.  Contact me directly at sphoenix@hbculibraries.orgmailto:sphoenix@hbculibraries.org if you have questions or need additional information.

Respectfully,

Sandra
