Tennessee State University launched its first-ever Academic Summer Boot Camp on Saturday, June 4, to help new almost 100 new students get acclimated to the college environment.

The rigorous four-week residential program, created by President Portia Shields, allows newly admitted students to gain an academic and personal experience through an inclusive and supportive on-campus environment while engaging in daily activities in a camp-like recreational atmosphere including swimming, horseback riding, and wall climbing.

Directed by Dr. Joseph Perry, the month-long initiative will offer students quality instruction, individualized tutoring, and computer technology training. Aimed at retention and after graduation success, the program gives students a chance to participate in homework assignments, classroom presentations and peer counseling sessions, similar to the experience that awaits during the regular academic year. Upon completion of the program, students will have earned three credit hours to apply to their major field of study entering the fall semester.

The program ends July 2, 2011.
