GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the administrative direction of the Library Director, the Night Librarian is responsible for providing circulation services and for providing
reference assistance to students, faculty and staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Providing circulation services and reference assistance to students, faculty and staff
- Develop the library's collections to best serve library users
- Prepare reports, to write correspondences; to operate library machines and equipment
- Explains and assists in use of reference sources, such as card or book catalog or book and periodical indexes to locate information
- Issues and receives materials for circulation or for use in library
- May compile list of library materials according to subject or interests, using computer
- Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files
- Searches catalog files and shelves to locate information
- Assembles and arranges displays of books and other library materials
- Maintains library collections of books, serial publications. Documents, audiovisual, and other materials, and assist groups and individuals in
locating and obtaining materials
- Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services
- Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of standard print and electronic sources or specific discipline
- Must have strong interpersonal skills, critical thinking skills, data retrieval skills, and information technology skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to organize, develop, and maintain records
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of library automation systems
- Knowledge of library practices, procedures and techniques, search strategies
- Knowledge of the laws, regulations and departmental policies pertaining to library services
- Knowledge of office machines, computers, search stations, word processors and automation system
- Knowledge of collection development policies, procedures, and best practices
- Skills in speaking and writing effectively
- Skills in the use of computers and library equipment
- Ability to relate effectively to library patrons and to co-workers
- Ability to prepare clear and concise statistical and narrative reports
- Ability to employ critical and analytical thinking skills to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables not covered in
standard policies and procedures
- Ability to complete tasks
- Ability to pay attention to accuracy
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions
- Ability to maintain confidentially
- Ability to stay abreast on new procedures affecting library and services
- Ability to supervise assistants and volunteers
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbal, written and oral
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work within a diverse campus community
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in Library Science or Information Science from an A.L.A. accredited program
- One year of experience in library work
- Experience working in an automated library and possessing a very high familiarity with the use and management of computerized library
resources in a networked environment, preferably academic library.
