Southern University at New Orleans News February 3, 2014 SUNO to Host Reconstruction Conference Feb 7-9 The Louisiana Reconstruction Conference is the first in a series of public programs designed to educate the public about the people, events and landmarks associated with the era known as Reconstruction. Sponsored by Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) and the Louisiana Public History Forum, the conference is scheduled Friday, February 7 through Sunday, February 9. An opening reception is scheduled at 6 p.m. Friday, February 7 at the McKenna Museum of African Art, 2003 Carondelet St., New Orleans, LA 70130. Panel sessions are scheduled Saturday, Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in SUNO's College of Business & Public Administration. The conference will culminate with a Reconstruction tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, February 9. The period of Reconstruction in Louisiana began immediately following Emancipation in 1865 and ended with the last Black Louisiana legislator holding office in 1895. The conference will dispel the myths surrounding this 30-year-period of history and advance the public's knowledge about the advancements and contributions of people of African descent during this time.
