Cheyney University News February 14, 2014 Cheyney Family Descendant to Speak at CU on February 26 at Founder's Week Activity focusing on the Squire Cheyney Farm, Cheyney Family, and the Revolutionary War: CU Alum Marion Lane ('70), revolutionary war expert, to also speak about Patriots of African Descent in the Revolutionary War The Cheyney Foundation and Cheyney University of Pennsylvania are teaming up to host a lecture and reception on Squire Thomas Cheyney, a Revolutionary War Patriot who played a significant role in the Battle of Brandywine of 1777 by informing General George Washington that the British were about to attack from the north. That warning and Washington's decision to confront the British troops spared American troops from potentially disastrous results during the American Revolution. Attendees of the February 26 event will also learn about the Historic Squire Cheyney Farm and discover how the Cheyney Family figures in to Cheyney University and Patriots of African Descent in the Revolutionary War. Curtis Cheyney, III, Esquire, a descendant of Squire Cheyney, will present a lecture. He is nationally prominent as National President of the General Society, Sons of the Revolution (SAR). He is also President of the Cheyney Family Trustees, and Senior Counsel at Wetzel, Gagliardi & Fetter, LLC. Cheyney University sits on land that was purchased from the Cheyney family in 1902. Marion Lane, Ed. D., a 1970 graduate of Cheyney University, will also present a lecture. She is in her second term as National President (Commander in Chief) of the Society of the Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge; she is the first African American to hold that position. Lane is a national, state, and local officer of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).She is also a member of The Gavel Society, a membership organization for the presidents of heritage societies, such as the DAR and SAR. Lane also sits on the Board of Directors of the Museum of the American Revolution, the Board of Directors of the Friends of Valley Forge National Historical Park, and is the author of the Children's Book Patriots of African Descent in the Revolutionary War. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Bucks County Chapter of the Links, Inc. The lecture is scheduled to coincide with the release of the current issue of US Airways magazine, which features a story on Squire Cheyney and his farm, across the street from Cheyney University, as well as Cheyney University and its aquaponics program, titled, "Preserving the Past of Cheyney University: The Home of a Hero."
