Hampton University Biology Professor Awarded $613,265 Excellence in Research Grant

Hampton University associate professor in the School Science, Dr. Indu Sharma, has been awarded a $613,265 excellence in a research grant from National Science Foundation. The grant, titled "Excellence in Research: From genomics to ecophysiology: the adaptive metabolic strategy of heterotrophic marine Cyclobacterium species," will expand research capabilities for the university and will provide new research opportunities for students.

"Congratulations to our own Dr. Indu Sharma for this amazing achievement," said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey. "Dr. Sharma is a great example of the excellent faculty we have here at Hampton University. This new grant will support more biological research opportunities and provide our students with new technology to assist them in their continuing growth."

This project will examine "how C. marinum Atlantic-IS adjust its growth in response to different organic matter present in the marine environment. This research will advance our understanding of 1) microbial degradation of complex carbohydrates during an algal bloom, 2) molecular processes involved in different carbon utilization, and 3) the ecological activities and biogeochemical roles of as-yet uncultured relatives. This study actively engages undergraduate students.

Hampton University students will gain knowledge and skillsets spanning molecular biology methods, microbial physiology, cutting-edge technology, and quantitative data analysis. This training will contribute to student retention in STEM, increase diversity and workforce development.

The proposed study will expand the research capabilities of Dr. Sharma and build research capacity at Hampton University. This work is part of an ongoing collaboration between Hampton University and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, located in Woods Hole, Mass.
