Two Denmark Technical College Students Chosen for Internships at Los Alamos
Two Denmark Technical College students are currently out in New Mexico gaining valuable work skills as summer interns at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Ms. Sully Olivo, is a native of the Dominican Republic and is an Associate in Arts major. Corey Freeman, from Aiken, SC, is a Computer Technology major.
The students will be working at the Undergraduate Student (UGS) Program at Los Alamos on their summer internships for undergraduate students. The program is a year-round educational program that provides students with relevant research experience while they are pursuing an undergraduate degree. This educational program is designed to complement the students' education with work experience related to their chosen field of study with appointments in both the technical and professional fields. The mission of Los Alamos is to solve national security challenges by delivering science and technology to protect our nation and promote world stability.
Ms. Avis Gathers, VP for Student Affairs will be travelling to the site, she says "My visit to Los Alamos is to support our students, see them perform their job duties first hand, and to also have greater insight into Department of Energy's expectations so that the College can prepare students for future internships as we develop our partnership through an HBCU collaboration in a developing Cyber-Security initiative. These internships will provide valuable work experience for our students."
In the past, several DTC students became summer interns for on-the-job experience in their majors. DTC had interns serving at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif.; NASA-Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, Aiken, S.C.
This is a wonderful opportunity for two special students who chose to come to Denmark Technical College "where great things are happening." Congratulations to both Ms. Olivo and Mr. Freeman for all of their hard work.
Denmark Technical College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award Associate Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates. For more information call 803-793-5176 or go to www.denmarktech.edu.
