Bethune-Cookman University News September 2016 B-CU to Receive $908,540 in Partnership with Florida A&M University on an Award from The National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) will receive $900,000 over a five-year period as a member of the Center for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems (CCME) funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI). B-CU is one of the six partnering institutions working with lead institution Florida A&M University (FAMU), California State University - Monterey Bay (CSUMB), Jackson State University (JSU), Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC), and the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). B-CU along with other partner institutions bring an abundance of significant academic programs and faculty with extensive expertise in coastal marine ecosystems. These institutions also have well-established records of policy, preparing graduates for productive careers and conducting high impact research. Dr. Hyun Jung ("J.") Cho, Professor of Integrated Environmental Science will serve as the B-CU Principal Investigator and will lead one of CCME's three thematic areas, "Place-based Conversation," which will address management of coastal resources and environmental challenges facing coastal communities such as habitat loss, water quality degradation, loss of biodiversity, and balancing economic issues of resource management and recreation. "At B-CU, funds will support cohorts of Masters of Science students (4 students/cohort) majoring and conducting research in Integrated Coastal Environmental Science," said Dr. Cho. "Competencies in Geographic Information Science and Remote Sensing will be achieved through a custom-built intensive online GIS/Remote Sensing program for Coastal Sciences and Management. Geospatial Laboratories at the partnering institutions (B-CU, CSUMB, UTRGV and FAMU) will develop this training to help students to address ecological and coastal resource management issues," she added. This award was announced at the NOAA EPP/MSI 8th Biennial Education and Science Forum held in New York city following a rigorous national competition. SANDRA M.
