Alabama State University News July 29, 2019 ASU Foreign Exchange Student from Virgin Islands Wins National Achievement Award! A foreign exchange student attending Alabama State University from the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, is the winner of one of the National Student Exchange (NSE) programs Student Achievement Awards. Exchange student Selena Cuffy - who studied psychology at ASU during the Spring 2019 semester - was awarded the NSE's Dr. Richard R. Bond Community Engagement Award, which is named after a former NSE consortium leader. The National Student Exchange is headquartered in Ames, Iowa and its president said that these awards are presented to students who get active and involved at their American host school. "Ms. Cuffy's award recognizes her demonstrating the best use of her study-away exchange participation at Alabama State University, her contribution to the campus and its community, and her creative use of the time she had while on her exchange program in Montgomery," said Debra Sanborn, NSE president. She added that in addition to her award, a $500 stipend was also presented to her. CUFFY EXCELLED WHILE A STUDENT @ ASU The director of Diversity and International Affairs and the NSE coordinator at ASU is Dr. Linwood Whitten. He said that Cuffy's engagement at Alabama State was widespread and positive; both on and off campus. "Her strong work ethic, positive attitude, team player mentality, and proven leadership abilities made her a worthy recipient of this award," Whitten said. "Cuffy demonstrated this worthiness by achieving several things, which included maintaining a GPA above 3.5, participating in campus-life activities, attending the #MeToo HBCU Tour, joining the Psychology Club and much more," he said. Whitten added that as a psychology major, Cuffy conducted case studies on Antisocial Personality Disorder and even delivered a presentation to fellow ASU students about the culture and history of the Caribbean Islands, specifically the Commonwealth of Dominica, which is her home. "Throughout her time at Alabama State University, it became evident that Cuffy is a positive, intrinsically motivated servant leader with amazing potential," Whitten said.
