Fayetteville State University Receives Federal Funding for Two TRIO Talent Search Awards
Fayetteville State University has received notification of two federal grant awards in the amounts of $1,399,200 and $1,200,000 over a five-year period.  Talent Search identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, who have the potential and desire to succeed in higher education.  The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and complete their postsecondary education. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete postsecondary education.
Dr. Teresa Thompson-Pinckney, Executive Director of College Access and Success Programs said, "We are excited about this opportunity to not only prepare disadvantaged youth to complete high school, enroll into college, and graduate but we also have the opportunity to expand the number of students we serve in Cumberland, Hoke and Robeson counties.  We are funded to serve 1,083 middle and high school students, which almost doubles the number of students we served this past year."
Talent Search will continue to serve students who attend Douglas Byrd High, E. E. Smith High, Hoke County High, Red Springs High, and West Hoke Middle.  Services have been expanded to students who attend Douglas Byrd Middle, Seventy First High, South View High and Westover High.
The Office of College Access and Success Programs' mission is to encourage and assist youth who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education with preparation for, entry into, and completion of a post-secondary education.  The Office is comprised of federally funded programs that include 21st Century Community Learning Centers, TRIO Talent Search, TRIO Upward Bound, TRIO Upward Bound Math & Science, and AmeriCorps VISTA.
