Shaw University News September 28, 2021 Shaw University Receives $175,000 Grant Award from Lumina Foundation Shaw University proudly announces a $175,000 grant award from Lumina Foundation to support Shaw's Adult Learner Institute. The purpose of the Shaw University Adult Learner - Pathways to Success program is to build institutional capacity to increase recruitment, enrollment, degree attainment, and high-quality credentials that align with employment for transfer and unenrolled adults to ensure career readiness after graduation. Shaw University President Dr. Paulette Dillard said, "Shaw University is proud to partner with Lumina Foundation in its mission to uplift education and leadership and reimagine how learning is done. We are grateful for this grant, which will be used to support lifelong learning for our adult students." Lumina Foundation works in partnership with education and business leaders, civil rights organizations, policymakers, and individuals who want to reimagine how and where learning occurs. Lumina works with partners to pursue racial equity by ensuring that colleges, universities, and other education providers do all they can to make opportunity real for students of color, students who are the first in their families to go to college, students from low-income families, and working-age adults. Shaw University, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, is the first historically Black institution of higher education in the South and among the oldest in the nation. The University was founded in 1865 by Henry Martin Tupper. Shaw boasts many "firsts": the first college in the nation to offer a four-year medical program, the first historically Black college in the nation to open its doors to women, and the first historically Black college in North Carolina to be granted an "A" rating by the State Department of Public Instruction.
