University Of Maryland Eastern Shore News June 27, 2012 Board of Regents awards pioneer in agriculture Dr. Arthur L. Allen<http://www.umes.edu/NM/Default.aspx?id=16322>, a pioneer in the pursuit of ways to help agriculture on Delmarva be more environmentally compatible with the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, is a 2012 recipient of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents' Faculty Award for Research/Scholarship/Creative Activity. Allen joined the UMES faculty in January 1996 and has played a critical role in securing more than $4.3 million in grants for the university in recent years. He works closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and facilitates collaboration on a number of joint projects with other research institutions, including Penn State, Auburn and the University of Arkansas. His research focuses on measuring the impact of subsurface applications of dry poultry litter on crops, nutrient losses and odor emissions in minimum tillage crop production systems - as well as transferring technology to farmers. Allen is an associate professor in the Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences within UMES' School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences. He also serves as Associate Research Director for the university's Agricultural Experiment Station. The award citation noted that "Dr. Allen's dynamic research is largely centered on reducing soluble phosphorus losses in drainage ditches while using synthetic gypsum and a technology that involves applying poultry litter beneath surface soil. In the past three years, Dr. Allen has published 37 scientific articles with two book chapters." USM's governing board annually recognizes faculty members from member institutions who excel in teaching; scholarship, research or creative activities; public service and innovation. It is the highest honor presented by regents to exemplary faculty, who also receive a $1,000 cash award. The Council of University System Faculty recommends honorees to the board for its approval.
