DSU Ph.D. Student Receives NASA Honor for Research Poster

Michael J. Williams, a doctoral optics student, has been honored by NASA for presenting one of the top research posters during a recent competition hosted by the space agency.

Held at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., Mr. Williams received an Award of Excellence for an Outstanding Poster in the engineering category.

Mr. Williams' poster was actually assigned by NASA. The space agency asked DSU to come up with a technical design for a reconstructed camera system that incorporated laser radar.

Because Mr. Williams had previously earned a master's degree in material science and has been working on laser radar with Dr. Renu Tripathi, DSU associate professor of physics, he was able to obtain an internship with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center this summer. It was there he drew the assignment.

"NASA wants to use (the laser radar) for future unmanned missions," Mr. Williams said. "Laser radar can be used to document distance, for docking missions, as well as for robotic surveying."

Mr. Williams, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., says he wants to land a career at NASA in space instrumentation. "I have always wanted to have a hands-on approach to space exploration," he said. "I want to focus my talent, skills and knowledge on the advancement of space science."
