Hampton University News July 10, 2014 HU Business of Engineering Program receives grant to support renewable energy activities The Hampton University Business of Engineering (BOE) program has received a grant from Battelle to enhance the program's renewable energy activities. The $9,000 grant will be used to purchase energy/power sensors, dissectible fuel cell units and additional renewable energy kits. Last year, Battelle awarded BOE a $10,000 grant to purchase mobile tablet devices (i.e. iPads). The devices are used to support the alternative and renewable energy learning labs and student activities conducted during the program. The two-week summer program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, exposes high school students to real world business and engineering decision-making, cutting edge computer design software and methods of problem solving used in engineering. This summer more than 20 students will be engaged in workshops and case studies focused on analytical thought, integrating the core principles of business and engineering. "The continued support from Battelle is helping us expand our capabilities in fulfilling our vision of developing the future workforce leaders," said Dr. Otsebele Nare, HU assistant professor of electrical engineering and co-director of the BOE program. "We are also able to integrate these resources to enhance our course delivery." "As the program and the relationship with Battelle continues to grow, students in the HU BOE program continue to receive support from Battelle's Hampton Regional office, which in previous years included a site visit to Battelle facilities in Virginia Beach as well as facilitating the students opportunity to visit the ASNE Naval Corrosion Conference in Newport News," said Cort Coghill, manager with Battelle Protection Solutions group in Hampton Roads. Every summer, the Battelle team serves as judges of the students' energy grid concept designs. This is the third year that HU has received this grant and the fourth year the Battelle staff has invested time in the BOE program. The Business of Engineering program is held from July 14-25th, on the campus of HU.
