Student athletes volunteer while studying abroad in South Africa
Two Jackson State University student-athletes along with other students extended a helping hand while studying abroad in South Africa.
Laura Uzell, women's bowling, and Karmen Jackson, volleyball, traveled to South Africa for four weeks as a part of the JSU Passport to the World: Public Health/ Outreach Program.
While researching and studying in South Africa, Uzzell and Jackson took time out to visit the Victoria Hospital. They spoke with several patients and handed out sandwiches.
After visiting the hospital, they stopped by the Phumlani Community Center to interact with children ages 3-17 and serve them a lunch of sandwiches, chips and juice.
JSU Passport to the World is a four-week faculty-led international experience that includes organized cultural, research and experiential learning activity.  Students spend two weeks abroad and two weeks on campus.
The goal of the program is to provide educational and cultural experiences that will have an indelible impression upon the lives of students through increased cultural awareness, change in academic performance and increased career opportunities.
This program is offered through JSU-Global.
