Honors Program Student Combines Love of Computers, Business

It was during a particularly demanding course at Bowie State University that Dhoruba Glover discovered his passion for computer science.

Now, the Honors Program student has found a way to marry his seemingly divergent interests, business and computer science, at a summer internship at PriceWaterhouseCooper (PwC), one of the world's largest professional services companies.

Taking the data structure and algorithms class was one of several experiences at Bowie State that prepared Dhoruba for the internship. The computer science major stayed up late for several nights to solve various programming problems. One technically challenging exercise unlocked an innate passion. "I knew then that I had found my true calling because I was so driven to find a solution. Finally figuring it out [is] rewarding," he said.

During the PwC internship, Dhoruba uses skills gained as a computer science major to analyze and implement different business applications in a financial services environment.

"It is a very exciting opportunity," he said. The experience is all the more exciting knowing that he beat out several Ivy League students to land the internship. Thinking back to the extensive interview process, he said, "It was sort of intimidating ... but I expressed confidence in my institution and represented it well."

Dhoruba got his first chance to work on real-world projects when he joined the first cohort of the university's signature Education Innovation Initiative (EI2)http://www.bowiestate.edu/about/office-of-the-president/education-innovation-initiativ/. It focuses on exposing underrepresented students in Prince George's County to science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) programs. As an EI2 participant, Dhoruba worked on cloud computing, cybersecurity and mobility. That experience was a stepping stone for other opportunities.

He also joined the Honors Program, which allowed him access to a supportive group of like-minded peers. "It was great surrounding myself with scholars who are just as focused on their careers as I [am]," he said. Plus, "we are always looking out for each other," he said.

The Honors Program network was also key to placing him right where he wanted to be-in the heart of corporate America. "I don't think I would ... have this internship had it not been for all of my professors at Bowie State. Everyone showed me they believed in me and helped me build up my confidence, which is up there with what it takes to be successful."

Dhoruba plans to finish his bachelor's degree in December 2015 and work full time before pursuing a Master of Business Administration. He hopes to one day own a soccer team.
