Talladega College Receives Additional $500K for William R. Harvey Museum of Art

Governor Kay Ivey and the State of Alabama have provided an additional $500,000 for the construction of Talladega College's William R. Harvey Museum of Art, which will house the acclaimed Hale Woodruff Amistad Murals. Alabama Senate President Pro Tempore Del Marsh of Anniston, AL and District 32 Representative Barbara B. Boyd made the announcement during the College's recent faculty and staff retreat at the Oxford Civic Center in Oxford, AL. Senator Marsh stated that Governor Ivey initially committed one million toward the museum's construction and the State later agreed to designate the additional funds due to the museum's tremendous historical and cultural significance and positive impact on Alabama.

"The whole world will be able to come and see the Amistad Murals," he stated. "It was a good day when we got one million for the museum, and it was a good day when we got an additional $500,000." Representative Boyd discussed her memories of taking classes at Talladega and being exposed to the acclaimed Murals. She said, "Talladega College prepared me for the world." Talladega College President Dr. Billy C. Hawkins said, "We are so appreciative of all that Governor Kay Ivey, Senator Marsh and Representative Boyd have done to help us fund the museum." The museum is named in honor of Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey, a Talladega College graduate who contributed one million dollars to the project.
