Hampton University News April 16, 2020 Sara Avery, Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications Student, Competes on the Black College Quiz to Win Scholarship Money Hampton University student Sara Avery recently appeared on Black College Quiz, a game show series that encourages an appreciation of African American Heritage by all people in an entertaining quiz show format. Avery not only won the episode but walked away with scholarship money. "Ms. Sara Avery continues to showcase the world-class education she is receiving here at Hampton University. She is smart, talented and kind," said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey. "Ms. Avery did a great job of representing her 'Home by the Sea' on the Black College Quiz." The Black College Quiz is hosted by Nephew Tommy, radio host, actor, comedian, producer and entrepreneur who is making his mark on the world of entertainment. The quiz show features college students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Predominately Black Institutions, and universities and colleges with Black Studies Departments from around the country, showcasing their knowledge and skills of African American history and culture. Avery, sophomore journalism student in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications from Raleigh, North Carolina, was selected by Dr. Rikesha L. Fry Brown, Hampton University's Director of Honors College, to be part of the show. Avery, who has a 3.98 GPA, is a member of the Honors College. "I thought initially this was going to be a team show, but when I received the information from Dr. Fry Brown, I realized it was an individual competition and I started to get nervous. There was a huge packet to study, with almost 40 pages of information," Avery said. Dr. Fry Brown and Avery traveled to Atlanta in January to partake in the quiz show. The actual episode aired on March 8. She competed against a student from Miles College and won the episode. Avery said she cannot reveal information about the second episode, but it will air in August. "It was a really great experience being on the show and I loved every minute of it," Avery said. The Black College Quiz consists of four rounds including multiple choice and short answer. Students compete for prizes and scholarship money by showing what they know about history, entertainment, politics and much more.
