Seasoned Educator Returns to Clark Atlanta University

Clark Atlanta University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Dorcas Davis Bowles as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, effective January 7, 2019. Dr. Bowles replaces outgoing Provost, Dr. Peter Nwosu, who is stepping down to accept a similar position at the City University of New York (CUNY) Lehman College.

Dr. Bowles is no stranger to the Atlanta University Center. During her tenure at Clark Atlanta University, she served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs from January 2003 -May 2008.  She also served as Dean of Whitney M. Young, Jr., School of Social Work at three different times, the most recent being from August 2015 to July 2016.

Dr. Bowles received her BS degree in Secondary Education from Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama; MSW degree in Clinical Social Work from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts; and her Ed. D. in Mental Health Administration from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Amherst, Massachusetts. She served as Professor, Associate Dean, and Acting Dean of Smith College School for Social Work; Northampton, Mass; Dean, the University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work, Arlington, Texas; and Distinguished Scholar of Social Work, Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, GA.  Dr. Bowles is the recipient of numerous awards and has written extensively in the area of clinical social work practice.

In her new role, Dr. Bowles will be responsible for preserving and elevating the University's academic enterprise and the solid program of research, innovation and discovery that undergird it, with oversight in curriculum planning, student success and faculty development, research and sponsored programs, strategic planning and shared governance.

"We are very fortunate to have someone with Dr. Bowles' experienced leadership on board at this pivotal time for the University," said Lucille Mauge, chief operating officer and interim president of Clark Atlanta University. "We welcome her return to CAU as we continue to focus on the student experience and moving the university to its next level of greatness."
