Fayetteville State University News July 26, 2013 FSU Student Named Local Foods Ambassador Fayetteville State University (FSU) student Kourtney Morris was selected as FSU's Local Foods Ambassador (LFA) for the 2013-14 academic year. This part-time paid internship opportunity will allow Kourtney to promote campus-wide local foods education and outreach and will bridge sustainability and dining services efforts on campus. This program is available through the NC 10% Campaign, an initiative through the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS). CEFS is a partnership between North Carolina State University, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services. Moreover, FSU has partnered locally with Aramark, the North Carolina Farm Center and Sustainable Sandhills to collaborate on this effort. Additionally, Kourtney represented FSU at the Appalachian Energy Summit (July 17-19, 2013) at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina as one of the finalist in the Student Poster Abstracts Competition. These abstracts could be either research that was done as part of the student's program of study or a campus or community oriented project that the student initiated. A wide range of energy-related topics were accepted including efficiency, renewables, education, policy, and pollution. The primary contribution had to be from the student with assistance from the faculty advisor. Kourtney's abstract was titled: "The Effect of Geothermal Cooling and Heating Systems on Greenhouse Gases and Energy Savings amongst Cumberland County School District in North Carolina," and can be viewed at http://sustain.appstate.edu/student-abstracts . A native of Fayetteville, Kourtney is a 2010 graduate of Cross Creek Early College High School and is a 2012 summa cum laude graduate of FSU with a degree in policy science with a concentration in public administration. She currently is enrolled in the FSU Graduate Certificate Program in Professional Writing. She plans to attend law school in 2014 and become an environmental attorney. FSU is a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina and the second-oldest public institution of higher education in the state.
