SC State to host CHINA Town Hall live webcast featuring Madeleine K. Albright

SC State University will partner with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations to host the CHINA Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections. China Town Hall is a national day of programming on China involving more than 60 cities throughout the United States, designed to provide Americans the opportunity to discuss U.S.-China relations with leading experts.
The seventh annual CHINA Town Hall Program will be held on Oct. 28 in the Recital Hall of the Barbara A. Vaughan Fine Arts Center. The Town Hall begins at 6 p.m. with a presentation given by Dr. Christian Murck, independent director of J.P. Morgan Chase (China) Co. Ltd. Murck's topic will focus on "U.S.-China Relations: Business Opportunities for the American Southeast." The keynote address will be presented in a live webcast at 7 p.m. featuring the Hon. Madeleine K. Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State.

In 1997, Albright was appointed Secretary of State, becoming the nation's first female to serve in the position. At the time, she was the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. Prior to her appointment, Albright served as the U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations and was a member of the president's Cabinet. Albright chairs the Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategy firm, and serves as chair of the Albright Capital Management LLC, an investment advisory firm focused on emerging markets. A professor in the practice of diplomacy at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Albright was chosen by President Barack Obama to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She received the nation's highest civilian honor in 2012 in recognition of her contributions to international peace and democracy.
After 22 years in Asia, Murck, who is now based in New York, NY, is a member of the International Advisory Council of APCO Worldwide, an independent, global communication, stakeholder engagement and business strategy firm. A former president of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, Murck led a staff of approximately 50 people in a chamber known for its policy and advocacy work and for innovative public-private partnerships in aviation, clean energy, healthcare, agriculture and food, and work safety. He previously chaired its Board of Governors in 2002 and 2003. Over a 17-year period, he was active in AmCham China as a spokesperson for the American business community in Beijing and Washington, D.C. He is a trustee of the Yale-China Association and a member of the Investment Committee of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia.

Hosting the CHINA Town Hall complements S.C. State's existing China-related academic and social engagement initiatives. As part of its foreign language options, the university offers the popular Mandarin Chinese courses, and enrolls students from China. In addition, one SC State student, Kendall Brice, a junior computer science major, participated in a study-abroad program in China last summer.

The National Committee on U.S.-China Relations is the leading national, non-partisan public affairs organization devoted exclusively to building constructive and strong relationships between the United States and China.

Free and open to the public, SC State encourages entrepreneurs and members of the business community to attend the event as well as SC State faculty and students, especially those in the School of Business. For more information, contact Dr. Learie Luke, director of the Office of International and National Student Exchange Programs, at (803) 533-3615 or lluke@scsu.edumailto:lluke@scsu.edu.
