Bethune-Cookman University News August 2017 Bethune-Cookman University Biology Student Spends Summer at U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory Paid summer internship experiences in enhanced training environments of national research facilities enables undergraduate students at Bethune-Cookman University to be ready for careers in their field of study. Abraham Dasilvio, Senior Biology Student at Bethune-Cookman University, participated in the 2017 10-week summer internship at the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Argonne, Illinois. Abraham performed research on Occupational Heat Stress Physiological Monitoring under the guidance of Mike Schmoldt, Industrial Hygienist at Argonne National Laboratory. Abraham's internship participation was funded by the United States Department of Energy Environmental Management Division (DOE-EM) Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP). The MSIPP Internships program operated by the Savannah River National Laboratory in South Carolina promotes the education and development of the next generation workforce in critical science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) related disciplines that compliment current and future missions of Department of Energy national laboratories. Abraham states "I am grateful to the MSIPP Internships program and my research mentor at Argonne National Laboratory for the opportunity to gain experience on the research challenges in the energy industry." At Bethune-Cookman University, Abraham Dasilvio engaged in multi-level internship preparatory activities including participation in data expertise development workshops offered by the National Science Foundation funded career development activities in the B-CU biology program. Last summer, Abraham participated in a bioinformatics research internship in the Department of Computer Science, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. "Abraham's accomplishments are phenomenal and I appreciate his efforts to seek diverse research experiences as an undergraduate student." says Dr. Raphael Isokpehi, B-CU biology professor and Abraham Dasilvio's research mentor.
