Coahoma Community College News April 12, 2019 CCC Students Recognized as All-Mississippi Academic Team Members Three Coahoma Community College students were among many community college students from across the state recently honored for their outstanding academic achievements and leadership during the 2019 All-Mississippi Academic Team Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, in Jackson, Miss. Brianna N. James, a biochemistry major received recognition as a transfer pathway student and recognized as an All Mississippi First Team member, Paige Powell, a pre-nursing major received recognition as a transfer pathway student and recognized as an All Mississippi Second Team member and Selena Marie Woods, a healthcare data technology major received recognition as a workforce pathway student and was recognized as an All Mississippi First Team member. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and college presidents and state associations sponsor All-State Academic Team ceremonies in 39 participating states. According to www.ptk.org, students from the 39 participating states are nominated to the All-USA Academic Team are named to the All-State Academic Teams. Ranking on the All-State Academic Teams are generally determined by the student's score in the PTK national competition. All-State Academic Team recognition ceremonies varies by state but are most often held in the state capital with legislators, education leaders, and corporate leaders attending. All-State Academic Team members receive special recognition at these ceremonies including medallions and certificates and may include scholarships. Nominees are hand-selected by colleges to serve as First and Second Team members for showing intellectual rigor and demonstrating academic, leadership and civic growth. CCC President Dr. Valmadge T. Towner and PTK Advisor Patricia Furdge and co-advisors Adrian Allen and Monica Thompkins were in attendance to show support for the CCC scholars. The All-Mississippi Academic Team, began in 1994 as the first state-level academic recognition program for community and junior college students, recognizes the scholarly achievements and leadership accomplishments of students enrolled in community and junior colleges across the state.
