Harris-Stowe Recognized for its Campus Sustainability Efforts
ST. LOUIS, MO (January 30, 2013) - The Missouri Recycling Association
(MORA) board of directors, last week, along with Missouri Governor Jay
Nixon, presented members of the Harris-Stowe State University
sustainability team with the MORA Excellence Award. The award recognized
HSSU for its outstanding participation in the 2012 RecycleMania
competition. The ceremony and reception were held at the State Capitol
Building in Jefferson City.
Harris-Stowe ranked 38th in the country in the category of waste
minimization and 113th in the overall grand champion category. "This
recognition is great for our university," said Benny Lewis, facilities
manager for the Emerson Performance Center and HSSU sustainability
coordinator. "To know that we are among the top 50 schools in a pool of
605 focusing on sustainability efforts on university campuses, is
something that should make HSSU and its stakeholders extremely proud."
Lewis attended the ceremony with Dr. Ann Podleski, professor of math,
who also serves on the sustainability committee and Jordan Bosman, a
senior marketing student.
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college
and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities
to their campus communities. Over an eight-week period each spring, 605
colleges and universities across the United States and Canada report the
amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked
in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita
basis. Schools are also measured by which have the best recycling rate
as a percentage of total waste and generate the least amount of combined
trash and recycling. With each week's updated ranking, participating
schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the
results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more.
Harris-Stowe State University, located in midtown St. Louis, is a
four-year institution that offers 14 degree programs in the areas of
Accounting, Business Administration, Biology, Criminal Justice, Early
Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Health Care Management,
Hospitality and Tourism Management, Information Sciences and Computer
Technology, Mathematics, Middle School Education, Professional
Interdisciplinary Studies, Secondary Education and Urban Affairs. Ranked
by U.S. News as one of America's Best Colleges in the Midwest, the
university, which has been in existence for more than 150 years, offers
the most affordable bachelor's degree in the state of Missouri. HSSU is
also home of the Don and Heide Wolff Jazz Institute.
