Savannah State celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Savannah State University (SSU) will host a number of presentations, panels, films and more during Hispanic Heritage Month. All events are free and open to the public.

Pedro Rivera, Ph.D., associate professor of history, will lead a discussion and screening of Forced and Forceful: The African Presence in Latin America, 1502-1619, Wednesday, September 18, 10 a.m., Asa H. Gordon Library, 202. The film is part of the Black in Latin America documentary series, the latest production from renowned Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., writer and presenter of acclaimed PBS programs.

Amir Jamal Toure, instructor of Africana studies, will speak about the shared history and common struggles of the Black and Latino experiences, Wednesday, October 2, 6 p.m., Torian Auditorium, Howard Jordan building.

Jorge Gavilanes, immigration attorney, will speak on current policies and laws, Thursday, September 19, 5 p.m., Torian Auditorium, Howard Jordan building. Gavilanes served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Donald Eyre and James Brady of the Utah Fourth District Court. He grew up in Ecuador.

Susana Hernandez, assistant professor of languages, will host a series of film screenings.
