Student Team Wins Solar Design Competition

Howard University team of architecture and civil engineering students were winners in the Solar Rooftop Table competition sponsored by The Residences at Thomas Circle, a senior assisted living facility in Northwest Washington, D.C. The students competed against Catholic University to create a proposal for a rooftop concept design that would help transform the under-utilized outdoor space. The two teams shared the prize of $2,500.
The interdisciplinary team, which included Daweit Gebru (senior), Carlos Homes (sophomore) and Jamie Wilson (freshman), was advised by Nea Maloo, assistant professor in the Department of Architecture. The students proposed an easily accessible, modular solar picnic table design equipped with electrical outlets and shade to protect residents from the sun. Theperformance of the table with its solar generation and maintenance, was evaluated along with aesthetic appeal.
"Guiding the students through this project was a rewarding experience," said Maloo. "I hope Howard can complete more sustainable projects in the local community."
The competition started in October and wrapped up on Jan. 29 with an oral presentation and model demonstration. The judges, which included architects, engineers and residents, decided that both teams were equally good and should split the prize.
