B-CU Alumnus First to Complete FIU Bridge to Doctorate Program
B-CU computer engineering alumnus John Gibson successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation, "Reconfigurable Antennas Using Liquid Crystalline Elastomers" in electrical engineering at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, on Thursday, March 22, 2018. Gibson enrolled in the National Science Foundation Bridge-to-the-Doctorate program at Florida International University (FIU) in fall 2013 after graduating from B-CU with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering.
Dr. Gibson is the first to obtain a Ph.D. degree in the FlU National Science Foundation Bridge-to-the Doctorate Program. Gibson is also the first in his family to obtain a doctoral degree.
The Bridge to the Doctorate program is a fellowship program that helps underrepresented students pursue graduate degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields. Students in the program receive a full-tuition waiver and an annual living stipend of $32,000 for the first two years, allowing students to solely focus on research.
