International symposium on health disparities to be held at Tuskegee

Tuskegee University, in collaboration with Meharry Medical College and Morehouse School of Medicine, will host the 12th RCMI (Research Centers in Minority Institutions) 2010 International Symposium on Health Disparities on Dec. 4-9.  The four-day symposium, "Bridging the Gap between Disparity and Equity: New Minds – New Methods," has been designed to offer RCMI institutions and their participants an opportunity to share research information in areas related to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, cancer, women's health, mental health, infectious disease, stroke, and behavioral and social health.

This collaborative effort, expected to draw 400-450 participants, is sponsored by the National Center for Research Resources Division of Research Infrastructure and hosted by the RCMI Programs at Meharry Medical College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Tuskegee University.

The National Center for Research Resources Research Centers in Minority Institutions program enhances the research capacity and infrastructure in minority colleges and universities that offer doctorates in health sciences.  Because many investigators at RCMI institutions study diseases that disproportionately affect minorities, the program serves the dual purpose of bringing more minority scientists into mainstream research and enhancing studies of minority health.

RCMI support is provided by the NCRR Division of Research Infrastructure.  It provides funding to recruit established and promising researchers, acquire advanced instrumentation, and renovate laboratories for competitive research, fund core research facilities, and other research support.

For registration information, call 404-559-6191 or go to www.rcmibiennial.org. Inquiries can be sent to registrar@rcmibiennial.org. The pre-registration deadline is Friday, Nov. 5.
