Southern University News December 2, 2011 SU signs agreement with the USDA Forest Service Southern and the USDA Forestry Services have signed an agreement to enhance urban forestry education on the Baton Rouge campus. Southern University and its Urban Forestry Program have signed an agreement with the United States USDA Forest Service to enhance urban forestry education on the Baton Rouge campus. The agreement was signed by USDA Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, during the National Forestry Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii in November. Tidwell praised Southern's Urban Forestry Program for its 20 years of contribution to the nation and the workforce, saying the program is a model for the nation. "This program at Southern is an excellent example of how we're being able to reach out and attract some different people to get engaged and involved in forestry in all aspects of forestry...and I look forward with us being able to move forward with this kind of rejuvenation of a longstanding partnership with Southern University," said Tidwell. The agreement states that the USDA will assist Southern in attracting undergraduate and graduate students in forestry and related natural resource science fields, provide students with employment opportunities, tuition assistance, paid internships and books.
