N.C. A&T Professor Receives Multiple Engineering Awards

Dr. Salil Desai, associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at North Carolina A&T State University was recently awarded the distinguished Chao and Trigger Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Outstanding Mid-Career Teaching Award by the American Society for Engineering Education in the manufacturing engineering division.

"I am honored to be recognized as the recipient of these prestigious awards from professional engineering societies," said Desai. "These awards signify the role we play as both researchers and educators to impact student training and education. They are in direct alignment with N.C. A&T's Preeminence (2020) goals as a premier research, science and technology-focused institution."

The Chao and Trigger Young Manufacturing Engineer Award annually recognizes a young manufacturing researcher under 40 years old with potential for significant, fundamental contributions to the science and technology of manufacturing processes.

The most recent recipients of the Chao and Trigger Young Award were from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; University of Iowa, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Purdue University and Northwestern University.

Also a recipient of the Outstanding Mid-Career Teaching Award, Desai qualified for the award due to his exceptional classroom performance, including possessing the ability to communicate broad and accurate knowledge of the subject area; demonstration of an intense interest and enthusiasm for the subject and for the enhancement of learning processes that motivate students; available for student counseling before and after graduation; and have considerable endorsement from students through evaluations and recommendations. Additionally, requirements stipulate that the recipient should participate in the development of courses or curriculum, teaching equipment, publication of original work, service as a mentor and more.

Desai obtained his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Mumbai in India and a M.S. and Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

In March he was also selected to receive the UNC Board of Governor's 2016 Excellence in Teaching Award for N.C. A&T.
