Fort Valley State University August 3, 2011 FVSU receives $150,000 grant for Rehabilitation Counseling program Rehabilitation counselors make a huge impact in the communities they serve—whether it’s helping paralyzed veterans regain independence, assisting the disabled to increase their mobility, or aiding special needs residents. Soon, Fort Valley State University’s Rehabilitation Counseling and Case Management (RCCM) master’s program will increase the number of counselors serving critical areas. A $151,306 grant from the U.S. Department of Health Resources and Services Administration will be used to provide financial assistance to students entering the graduate program. RCCM is the first and only one of its kind available online among University System of Georgia institutions. “We all are close to someone with a disability,” said Anna Holloway, dean of graduate studies and extended education. “We are very grateful to receive this financial assistance so that more individuals can receive their master’s and work in this field,” she said. “Our hope is to increase the enrollment, retention, and capacity building of the program,” said Doris Nyaga, FVSU’s pre-award coordinator, in the Office of Sponsored Programs, who identified, developed and submitted the grant proposal that won approval. “The rehabilitation counseling program serves the local, regional, state and national community,” said Dr. Jerry Brenner, RCCM program coordinator. “We provide excellent, state-of-the art training to qualified students, who’ll [help] people with disabilities explore and maximize their career and life paths in independent and satisfying ways.” The funder, the U.S. HRSA, is the primary federal agency that improves health care access for the uninsured, isolated and medically vulnerable, according to their website.
