South Carolina State University News August 19, 2010 SC State University Announces Unveiling of Honors College SC State University will officially unveil its new Honors College at a ribbon-cutting ceremony tonight at 7 p.m. in the Dr. Barbara A. Vaughan Recital Hall. In the fall of 1988, the Honors Program was initiated under the leadership of Dr. Roy L. Simms who served for 12 years as the first director. Following his retirement in 2000, Dr. Harriet A. Roland was appointed as the director of the Honors Program. The SC State Board of Trustees gave final approval in February 2010 for the implementation of an Honors College, to become effective beginning in the 2010-2011 academic year. "The emergence of an Honors College at SC State signals an exciting new era for providing academically gifted and talented undergraduate students with even greater opportunities and resources for developing great minds through a curriculum infused with intellectual rigor and through stellar faculty teaching," said Roland, interim dean of the Honors College. The Honors College is comprised of more than 250 scholars who hail from across the United States and several international countries. "As members of the Honors College, our students will also be exposed to new avenues in research, leadership and character development, graduate school and career preparation, service learning, study abroad and internship opportunities," Roland said. SC State Board of Trustees members, as well as federal, state and local government officials, civic leaders, the President's Cabinet, University faculty, staff and students, and other supporters of the institution are expected to be in attendance at tonight's ribbon-cutting ceremony.
