South Carolina State University News June 21, 2012 SC State University Student/Faculty Initiative Leads to Dynamic Opportunities Kelsey D. Butler, a freshman education major at SC State University and Chia-Wen Huang, visiting lecturer and teacher of Mandarin Chinese, were prominent guest speakers at the 2012 Presidential Election and Civic Engagement. This program was the first student/faculty event of the spring 2012 academic term to shed light on the president election which will be held in November 2012. This academic event, supported by the Department of English and Modern Languages and held in Staley Hall Auditorium, explored the relevancy of how culture and language might impact voters in November 2012. As a result of this program and the advisement of Dr. Delindus Brown, professor of communication in the department of English and Modern Languages at SC State University, Butler and Huang have been successful in securing other national and international opportunities to continue their research. On January 4-6, 2013, Huang and Brown will team up at the International Hawaii Conference on Education. During this event, they will investigate language and the role of communicating a more salient meaning in the classroom. The title of their presentation is: "Student Self-Assessment, Communications Skills, and Situational Contexts: Important Factors in Teaching Chinese to Students at South Carolina State University." Butler, joined by Dr. Delindus Brown and Dr. Gloria Hayes in the department of Education, will also give a presentation on: "The Impact of Education and Communication on Poverty is real in America." The paper was accepted by the Action Council on Poverty and is scheduled to be presented in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in March 2013. SANDRA M.
