Cheyney University News March 9, 2014 Cheyney University's Honda All-Star Team Makes it to the National Competition AGAIN by Angelitta Anderson Cheyney University's Honda team recently learned that its advanced to the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) national competition in Los Angeles, CA after doing extremely well at the regional games at Morgan State in Maryland. Honda established the "Battle of the Brains" 25 years ago as a way to showcase and recognize the academic talents of students at America's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Since then, its awarded the top competing HBCUs more than $7 million in grants. CU and the schools in this year's quiz bowl will vie for more than $325,000 in grants. The road to the 2014 games has been paved by CU's team members practicing countless hours with hands on buzzers, studying on their own, and honing their skills by doing numerous drills repeatedly for three hours at a clip, twice a week. For veteran players Joshua Hughes and Holland S. Culbreath, the team's captain, newcomers Richard E. Coleman, III and John Cooper, as well as their coach, Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Hazel Spears, all of their hard work has paid off! This April 12-16, they will be in LA representing CU at the Great 48 HCASC formal games. "Delivering a winning Honda team will certainly enhance Cheyney's reputation, and increase the respect for intellectual acumen here on campus," Coach Spears says. "I am very committed to enhancing the opportunities for developing intellectual rigor on this campus" "I feel that it's an honor to be chosen out of so many to represent our entire university on a national stage," declares Hughes, a junior biology major who represented Cheyney in last year's national competition. "I' m excited because I feel this year's team is better and continues to improve weekly." Coleman, a senior general science major, who competed for the first time last month at the regional level shares, "I loved the excitement of competition. It fed my competitive nature. It makes me feel good to see something positive happening with African-Americans. Usually attention is focused on the negative." The Keystone Honors Academy, led by Dean Tara Kent, sponsors Cheyney's participation in the All-Star Challenge. "The HCASC is a wonderful program that showcases the talents of students at the nation's historically Black colleges and universities," Dr. Kent notes. "We are very proud to be consistent participants in the national competition and so pleased with all that HCASC does to support our students." Participation in the games, she says, "presents a tremendous opportunity for our students to demonstrate their strengths, breadth of knowledge, and to network with the best and the brightest across the country." CU's Honda team is a living testament to the talent and excellence residing on Cheyney University's campus. The games are an Olympics of the mind! Honda practices are exciting to watch and very fast-paced.
