C. Smith University to be tobacco-free
In a major step to foster a healthy learning environment, Johnson C. Smith University will join a growing number of U.S. colleges and universities that have adopted a tobacco-free campus policy.
While smoking has long been prohibited in JCSU's buildings, the new policy that takes effect January 1, 2015 will extend to all campus grounds and university-owned and operated properties. Not only will this new policy effect cigarette smoking; it will encompass other tobacco and smoking products such as e-cigarettes.
As the college gears up to become a tobacco-free campus, an information campaign will take place over the next five months to help students and employees break their addiction to tobacco products. The campaign will offer health-related information, multiple smoking cessation programs and designate temporary smoking areas.
According to Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights, at least 1,372 campuses and universities have adopted the 100% smoke-free policy. Of these, 938 are 100% tobacco-free. "JCSU is proud to soon join these institutions as we strive to uphold our commitment to create a happy and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students and visitors," said Dr. Ronald L. Carter, president of JCSU.
