Paine College News May 21, 2012 James Hull Increases Endowed Scholarship at Paine College By Helene Carter “We must do all we can to enrich the lives of our young people and position Paine College within reach of students who have the desire to pursue a quality college education,” said Dr. George C. Bradley, Paine College president. “Too many of our young people have dreams and the determination but not the resources to fulfill those dreams.” Today, Dr. George C. Bradley announced that James M. Hull, Augusta businessman and philanthropist, donated $10,000 to add to the existing James M. and Karen N. Hull Endowed Scholarship which was established with an initial gift of $250,000 in 2008. The Hull Endowed Scholarship is awarded to students based upon merit and financial need. To date, five Paine students have benefited from the Hull Endowed Scholarship: Leondra R. Nash, Marcus Allen Smith, Caprice Harper, Jamesia Monroe and Omari Walthour. Leondra Nash, a native of Warner Robbins, Georgia, graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration and Accounting in the Class of 2012. “Having a strong Historically Black College in the Augusta community is an asset that very few cities possess, and I feel strongly that the Augusta community, irrespective of race, must support and help to build and foster this great institution,” said Hull, “I consider investing in Paine College a must for me as an interested citizen of our community because the professors, students, and graduates at Paine College improve and enrich our community every day in ways that are both obvious and unseen. Supporting Paine College is in Augusta’s best interest and is a smart thing to do.” The Hull Endowed Fund is included in the College’s endowment to be held in perpetuity, and only the income earned from the investment of the gift will be disbursed for scholarships. Dr. Bradley, in his comments regarding Hull’s generous donation, said, “Mr. Hull’s gift to the College demonstrates that the community views the Institution as a sound investment.
