(Bluefield)-Bluefield State College has received notification from the U.S. Department of Education that it will receive a $2.5 million grant. The five year grant is focused on Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA) activities.
The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009 earmarked funds for Federal Title III programs designed to help eligible Historically Black Colleges and University expand their capacity to serve by providing financial assistance to establish or strengthen their academic resources, financial management, endowment-building capacity, and physical plants.
SAFRA activities may include student services, educational equipment acquisition, facility renovation and construction, and faculty and staff development. Additional SAFRA activities include the establishment of community outreach programs to encourage elementary and secondary school students to develop their academic skills and increase their focus on pursuing postsecondary education.
"This is an important source of funding for the continuation of Bluefield State College's academic excellence and providing dynamic services to the campus community," observed Dr. Guy Sims, Title III Coordinator and Assistant to the President for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
