WSSU Students To Compete in National All-Star Challenge

Four students representing Winston-Salem State University will compete in the 2015 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National Championship Tournament to be held March 21-25 in Torrance, Calif.

The students who have been competing for the opportunity are: Tyrus Powell, a freshman art major from Winston-Salem; Kenya Raynor, a junior exercise science major from Fayetteville, N.C.; Kateema Jones, a senior exercise science major from Grifton, N.C.; and Darien Robinson, a senior justice studies major from Raleigh.  Cynthia Grant, division program manager for the University College and Lifelong Learning, serves as the team coach.

The WSSU team was one of 76 representing Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) from around the country in seven qualifying tournaments held in late January.  The team was one of 48 that earned the opportunity to compete for the title of national champion and a $50,000 institutional grant from Honda.

Now in its twenty-sixth year, the All-Star Challenge is a unique academic competition that showcases students from America's HBCUs.  Since 1989, the program has awarded more than $7.5 million in grants.  The 2015 National Championship will be live-streamed on Monday, March 23, starting at 12:00 ET on HCASC.com.
