Good afternoon:

Last year the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted an event to commemorate the public release of Developing a Toolkit for Fostering Open Science Practices: Proceedings of a Workshophttps://www.nap.edu/catalog/26308/developing-a-toolkit-for-fostering-open-science-practices-proceedings-of. The toolkit, authored by members of the NASEM Roundtable on Aligning Incentives for Open Science, is primarily intended to assist university leadership, academic department chairs, research funders, learned societies, and government agencies develop incentive structures to properly nurture and reward open research practices. It contains modular elements that can be adapted and adopted for a range of use cases, including language for hiring, tenure & promotion, and grantmaking; primers on good practices for openly sharing articles, data, and a number of other resource types, and an http://projectopen.io/ Open Science Success Stories Databasehttp://projectopen.io/, which compiles research articles, perspectives, case studies, news stories, and other materials that demonstrate the myriad ways in which Open Science benefits researchers and society alike.

I'm a member of that Roundtable, and I hope that you will take the time to download and review the Toolkit, if you have not already, and consider how your Library might work with your faculty to influence the expansion of open science and scholarship within the HBCU environment.

Additionally, please see the attached letter inviting your institution to participate in HELIOS (Higher Education Leadership Initiative for Open Scholarship).  There is no cost associated for participation and it is a good way for your institution to get onboard.  You may want to send a copy of the invitation to your Provost or other administrative officer.  I believe it is mission appropriate for the academic library to be involved in advancing open access to research.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you.
