North Carolina Central University News July 7, 2017 NCCU to Offer Certificate Program for Artists North Carolina Central University's (NCCU) College of Arts and Sciences is offering a new online certificate program for performing artists seeking to add an arts-education specialty to their portfolio. The Teaching Artist Certificate Program will be introduced in Fall 2017 and will focus on skills required to plan, design and implement arts experiences for general audiences, including auditorium performances, school residencies and cultural-arts programs for schools and community-based organizations. "The Teaching Artist Certificate Program is designed to train performing and visual artists how to lead an audience to cultivate understanding and interpretation of the arts and to assist classroom teachers to integrate the arts in an educational setting," said Carlton E. Wilson, Ph.D., interim provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. The program was designed as a first step in professional training for art-based instruction, Wilson added. "The certification is unique to the University of North Carolina System and the first of its kind at a Historically Black College or University; it's something students can leverage immediately upon completion," he said. Skills covered will include instructional techniques related to various aspects of music, art, theater and dance education for diverse audiences. Enrollment will be open to professional artists with a minimum of five years' experience, and others who have an associate or bachelor's degree in the arts. Students who are juniors and seniors and currently enrolled at NCCU are also eligible for the program. The 16-hour certification is open to the public.
