FSU Criminal Justice Department Awarded $859,000 Grant
The Department of Criminal Justice, in the College of Arts and Sciences at Fayetteville State University (FSU), has been awarded a major federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant provides $859,548 to fund the three-year project, which will focus on HIV prevention among African-American adults, aged 18-24 years. The project is aimed at creating sustainable prevention efforts on the FSU campus and in the surrounding communities.
The FSU project team includes: Dr. Karen McElrath, Dudley E. Flood Endowed Professor of Criminal Justice; Dr. Angela Taylor, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice; Dr. Maurice Mongkuo, Professor of Public Administration; Dr. Alexandru Stana, Assistant Professor of Communication; and Letitia Johnson-Arnold, Medical and Health Program Consultant in Student Health Services.
FSU will collaborate with Community Health Interventions and Sickle Cell Agency, a long-standing, community-based organization on the Murchison Road.  The partnership will implement a series of HIV prevention strategies for young adults and will also identify service gaps for young adults who experience substance misuse and/or Hepatitis C infection. FSU students and young adults in the surrounding communities will help guide the project, by providing informative advice at various stages over the next three years.
FSU is a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina and the second-oldest public institution of higher education in the state. FSU offers nearly 60 degrees at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. With nearly 5,000 students, Fayetteville State University is among the most diverse institutions in the nation.
