Saint Augustine's College Partners with the University of Arkansas for the George Washington Carver Research Program
In the fall of 2011, Saint Augustine's College embarked on a new venture with a dual purpose of providing summer internships and research opportunities for students and to guide students into top graduate school programs. Saint Augustine's College recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Arkansas (UofArk) to become a partner institution for the George Washington Carver Summer Program. This is the first partnership agreement between the two institutions and one of few that expands beyond a relationship that solely focuses on research.
The George Washington Carver Research Program is an initiative of the University of Arkansas designed to increase the racial diversity of the graduate and professional student body.
The partnership was spawned by Nichole Lewis, Director of the Belk Professional Development Center. "I was just following up on a cold call lead from Mr. Newman in IAD," Lewis said when asked how she learned about the opportunity. " He literally sent me a text that read, 'contact Alfred Dowe (Assistant Director of Recruitment and Community Outreach) at UofArk. Might be worth pursuing,' and included the number."
This summer, the following students will spend ten weeks at the University of Arkansas. The students will receive round-trip airfare, housing, a stipend and attend GRE preparatory courses. Each will work within their area of study on a project that is both professional and research based.
