Gadsden State Community College News April 2012 Job Shadowing Events Planned for April Students from area high schools will have an opportunity to spend the day being mentored by a professional during the job shadowing event coordinated by Gadsden State Community College's Career Transition Program-Cardinal Connections. Job shadowing allows each student to experience many aspects of the environment related to their future career choice. Approximately 200 juniors and seniors attending Anniston, Gaston, Glencoe, Hokes Bluff, Saks and Sardis High Schools will "shadow" a professional in their career field of interest to gain a unique and up-close look at the working world. Hokes Bluff High School students will participate on April 4, Saks students on May 10, and students from all other schools will experience the job shadowing April 26 and 27. Numerous businesses are adjusting their schedules to allow the students to participate in their business ventures for the day to help them attain a realistic perspective of the required training needed to succeed in the various careers. Throughout the day, students will be able to observe firsthand the responsibilities and duties involved in the career that they have chosen. Before the sessions, students submit several professions that they want to shadow, and the Gadsden State Career Coaches do their best to place each student in their first choice. The number and variety of businesses participating will ensure that each student gets to shadow in a career of interest to them. The act of job shadowing has become one of the most helpful and insightful programs sponsored by the Career Transitions Program at Gadsden State. A survey released by Junior Achievement indicates that American middle and high school students have unrealistic views of their future careers. Thanks to this program, these students will gain insightful on-the-job information about their potential careers. This knowledge either creates more excitement about their career choice or causes them to begin looking at additional options as they realize that their perception of the job is not accurate.
