North Carolina Caucus of Black School Board Returns to Fayetteville State University for 2016 Fall Retreat
The North Carolina Caucus of Black School Board Members (NCCBSBM) is pleased to announce their return to Fayetteville State University for its' Annual Fall Retreat & Issues Forum on Thursday, October 6, through Saturday, October 8, 2016. The theme for this year's event is "Tough Love: A Conversation for Policymakers on Low-performing Schools."  With school and state leaders attending from across NC, this year's Fall Retreat will examine the effects of racial, economic and educational isolation in an era of struggling schools, and promising solutions, according to Cumberland County School Board Member, Carrie Sutton. "We are certainly looking forward to having some courageous dialogue and conversations this weekend from several prominent local and state officials on this important topic," says Sutton.
The Speakers for the retreat will include several prominent state and local thought leaders, including Dr. James Anderson, Chancellor of FSU, Keith Poston, President of Public School Forum; and Former Teacher of Year and Program Director of Public School Forum, James Ford. Other invited guests include, NC State Representatives, Rob Bryan, and Marvin Lucas, and former state legislator and current Executive Director of NC Justice Center, Rick Glazier.
This year's program will also address other crucial issues impacting education from a local, statewide and national level.  On Thursday, a President's Reception will kick-off the weekend event featuring NC Principal of Year, Melody Chalmers, and NC Superintendent of year, Dr. Freddie Williamson from Hoke County Schools. The retreat will also highlight and provide in depth views on Race and Poverty, the state's Digital Learning Plan, and legislation on Lab Schools and the Achievement District.
The culminating event on Saturday will be a facilitated session on "2016 and Beyond," and a "Candidates' Forum on Education." Co- sponsored by the Alliance of NC Black Elected Officials, the "2016 and Beyond" regional series is a conversation starter, designed to enhanced communications between organizations and elected officials at each level of government. "2016 and Beyond" is also designed to create an environment for dialogue and conversations on research, polling data, and exchange of innovative thinking among member organizations for the benefit of communities of color.  The session will be followed by a "Candidates Forum on Education" and  will  feature Superintendent of the Department of Public Instructions, June Atkinson, and former state legislator and Candidate for Lt. Governor, Linda Coleman.
The NCCBSBM was founded in 2000 by African American school board members for the purpose of strengthening board leadership and public policy skills in public education. The NCCBSBM is the official Black Caucus of the NC School Board Association and works with NCSBA and other organizations each year to address issues that impact its' members and communities they serve.  The NCCBSBM mission is to ensure that local communities are better informed about policies and practices implemented by governing bodies which affect minority students.
