Alcorn State University News January 22, 2016 More Alcorn student teachers begin their careers in education A second group of Alcorn State University students are preparing to embark on their careers as teachers. Eight seniors participated in this semester's second Pre-Service Seminar in the Walter Washington Administration Classroom Building. The seminar is a program that prepares student teachers for various teaching tasks, legal issues in education, professional knowledge and professional practices in the field of elementary and secondary education. Kristen Hughes, a Meadville, Mississippi native majoring in elementary education, is looking forward to using her skills while leading her upcoming class. "I'm excited and nervous," said Kristen. "I'm excited to finally put the skills I've learned to use and take control of the classroom. I'm ready to meet my students." Rayven Riggs, a Brunswick, Georgia native majoring in physical education, feels equipped to succeed as a teacher. "I feel prepared because my instructors took all of the right steps to prepare us to be good teachers," said Rayven. Caleb Slack, a Minneapolis, Minnesota native majoring in music education, is confidant in his ability to lead a class. "I'm excited and nervous. It's a new challenge for me, but I am confident that I will be able to succeed," said Caleb. Dr. LaShundia Carson, director of student teaching and field experience in the Department of Education and Psychology, is thrilled about the students' futures. "I am very excited for the Spring 2016 student teachers to begin their final phase before becoming certified teachers," said Carson. "This gives the student teacher interns the opportunity to make the connection between the content learned in coursework and real life experiences in the classroom setting." SANDRA M.
